Message from KASBO President

As we begin the 2006-2007 school year, KASBO members face a year full of challenges and decision-making. In order to identify and understand these challenges, we need to obtain as much information as we can to aid in the decision-making process. This is what KASBO is all about – servicing our membership with information while at the same time putting a smile on people’s faces and having fun. Our Professional Development Committee recently spent an entire morning planning for the Fall Workshop in Salina. Our goal was to provide as much pertinent information as possible on subjects important for this year’s budget. We carefully reviewed previous surveys to be sure the presentations we schedule meet the needs of our membership. If you have not made plans, please join us Thursday, October 26 for lunch with afternoon workshops following. The Fall Workshop will conclude by noon on Friday.

We also want to remind you of the Winter Workshop scheduled for Wednesday, February 21 at the Smoky Hill Education Service Center in Salina. And finally, the annual convention will be April 18-20 at the Highland Manor Hotel and Convention Center in Great Bend. The Convention Committee is working diligently to plan an informational and fun filled three days. So, place the Fall Workshop, Winter Workshop and Convention dates on your calendars TODAY!!! Plan to attend and bring a colleague or a friend. If you have a new concept, approach, or are seeking information in a particular area, please contact our Executive Director, Karen Schadel, Clifford Burk KASBO President-Elect and Professional Development Chairman, or myself.

KASBO wants to serve you.

Board Shorts

From the KASBO Board of Directors Meeting of June 9, 2006

Hello to all members and non-members of KASBO. I send you greetings, once again, from the Board of Directors. We hope you have had a super summer and that the school year has started without too many complications (I said we hope!).

In looking back at some discussions from our meeting I just have to say that one big shining example of what we do is to provide professional development for less experienced school business people. Green badge numbers (new KASBO members) were great at the convention, the best in a long time. Our commitment to them, as well as all our members, is to keep them up to date and abreast of relative information and techniques for success.

That brings me to a couple of requests by the board. Please seriously consider offering your time as a mentor who will share your years of experience with someone new. Also, remember to invite any new school business officials to the KASBO workshops, in October and February, and to the state convention in April. Our fees are still $20 per year to become a member and $50 per workshop. This is a direct reflection of KASBO’s commitment to offer the best bargain with quality professional development opportunities.

Coincidentally, ASBO is another “opportunity” available to our members. The conference is October 13 th through the 16 th in Pittsburgh. The comments from members, who have been recently, sing high praises for the area where the hotel and convention are located. Don’t forget about the workshops and vendor shows. The event is always first class and this year KASBO members don’t have to work a reception and no one has to dress up like Dorothy (officially)!

Hey, a word about Karen Schadel, our Executive Director. Karen does a super job and, if you know her at all, you notice that she knows everyone from Tribune to Fort Scott-- everyone! Anyway, the Board voted to extend Karen’s contract another two years agreeing that she is one of our greatest ambassadors. Please thank her for her hard work when you see her next. And from the Board, we owe Karen a debt of gratitude for organizing our business and keeping us in line, Thank You!

Finally, put the dates on your calendar for the upcoming workshops. On Wednesday and Thursday, October 26 th and 27 th, we’ll meet at the Holiday Inn in Salina for the Fall Workshop. The Professional Development Committee worked out a super program and you need to be there. The Winter Workshop is on Thursday, February 22nd at the Smoky Hill Education Service Center in Salina. Also, put reservations in now for Great Bend from April 13 th through the 16 th. We promise not to have the “Bird and Snake Show” (you know you loved it), but, the convention committee promises to inform and entertain you.

“Who do you do it for…the kids!”
Dale Dennis , Deputy Commissioner of Education
