Message from KASBO President

Wow! What a summer! The summer months are usually a pretty busy time for most of you and I’m sure this summer has been an especially challenging one. It has been wonderful to have additional funds for the coming school year, but I know all of you have most likely been burning the midnight oil as you have worked with others in a very short period of time to develop budgets, get salary information ready, hire additional staff and prepare buildings in time for the students’ arrival. All the hard work is worth it when you see the excited faces of students as they start their first day of school.

I’d like to take a moment to thank Gary Diener for the awesome job he did of leading the KASBO organization this past year. He truly has led as an example of the convention theme in April, Soaring to Greatness! It is a daunting task to follow in his footsteps.

Since the April convention, the KASBO board met in June and had a very productive meeting. The board discussed ways to make the organization even stronger and came up with the following goals:

  • Pursue the establishment of a mentorship program within the organization. A committee has been formed to research what is being done elsewhere and perhaps develop some form of program for our organization. We have a lot of great human resources in our organization and would like to ensure that we’re sharing those resources with those who are new or want assistance.
  • Keep accountability in the forefront of everything we do, from creating more public awareness, dialoguing about issues, making sure we’re comparing apples with apples, working with superintendents, boards, community members and legislators.

I am looking forward to serving you this coming year. Please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail me with any suggestions you may have regarding our organization. If you have a suggestion regarding a topic you would like covered at a workshop or convention, I’m sure Fred Meier, Chairman of the Professional Development Committee, would love to hear from you. One of the things that make this organization a truly great one is the willingness of so many of you to share your knowledge and experience with others.

I look forward to seeing you at the fall workshop in October!

Board Shorts

From the KASBO Board of Directors Meeting of June 16, 2005.

The Board of Directors would like to say hello and congratulations on the success of the State Supreme Court and the reluctant Legislature. By now most of our members have settled or are hurriedly working towards solving the issue of having “money”.

President Kathleen Whitley started the conversation with the Board reviewing the 2005 Convention. The appeal of a larger town and post-convention shopping pulled together almost 300 of you members and vendors together but I’ll “wager” the best time remembered came at the Craps table, Roulette wheel, the Black Jack table, or the guy yelling obscenities from, can you believe, “Family” Feud. By the look of the crowd and the mesmerized faces , gambling fever hit hard.

In addition, we are all pleased with what Wichita offered in the form of professional development. It goes without saying the “Dale and Veryl Show” received high marks for their informative and humorous insight about what the hub-bub in Topeka was all about. President Whitley took us out to the Parking Lot for informal conversations where our hair was down and our tongues were loose. Anything goes in the Parking Lot and you found it advantageous to ask all those burning questions from others who have already been there. Furthermore, the “Key-Note” speaker caused us to look within ourselves for strength to continue the fight.

The call is out again for those wanting to attend the ASBO International Convention in Boston. The convention is set for October 21 st through the 24 th. Dr. Rob Balsters ’ persistent nature drove him to apply for the Vice-President position of the ASBO board. He, again, will have a reception to introduce himself as a candidate that will be hosted by KASBO attendees. The Board congratulates Rob and expresses our pride for his accomplishments. Additionally, we feel honored to have his participation, still, in our state organization.

Hey, you have heard some about KASBO’s new ListServ. We ask that you please make the effort to sign up. We are committed to running this differently than what you may normally experience. The idea is to have a quick, efficient way to send out information to our membership that is relevant and timely. You will not be barraged with surveys and sales items. Just the facts!

As boards do, we talked over some maintenance items during our meeting but not before we recessed to tour the Capital Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Topeka. Most of us have been there so fortunately it is gratifying to realize that there are plenty of rooms and the facilities make a convention of our size very feasible. I can’t speak for all but my excitement for next spring started early.

Back in our meeting the Board discussed a couple of items worth mentioning. First is the idea of a mentoring program for new business officials. Beth Senn, DataTeam, shared her familiarity of such while attending other state ASBOs. Second, we’ve tossed around the idea of a single, or a few, sites to hold KASBO each year. Pros discussed were standard and practical hotels and convention centers and cons may leave us a bored of the same places. Be thinking about what you would recommend and tell a board member the next time you see us. I leave you with Dale Dennis’ famous line, “…we are doing it for the kids!”
