The Association of School Business Officials' national conference in Charlotte, N.C. is October 31 to November 4. The theme this year is "Back to the Future." General session speakers include Ron Clark, Disney's 2002 Outstanding Teacher of the Year and Oprah Winfrey's first "Phenomenal Man." The conference will include information on such things as legal affairs, financial resource management, human resources, special education, facility management, transportation, risk management, food service, security, and new technology. It will also include asuper session on federal requirements pertaining to No Child Left Behind. Don't miss this opportunity to network with your peers on how to survive in these challenging times. One thing that I have found true serving on the ASBO school finance committee is that today's challenges are not unique to Kansas. If you are interested in attending the conference, registration information can be found on the http://www.asbointl.org/website. I hope to see you there!

Linda Jones, USD 259

The KASBO Board of Directors met June 4, 2003, at USD 305 Salina, Lakeview Middle School, with President, Lori Blakesley presiding.
Financial issues were addressed by the board. Workshop fees were set for the 2003-2004 year at $50 for KASBO members and $75 for non-KASBO members.
Workshop dates and sites were approved. The Fall Workshop will be October 9, 2003, at the Salina Holiday Inn. The Winter Workshop will be February 26, 2004 at the Smoky Hill Education Service Center.
The Professional Recognition Program was discussed in depth. The opportunity to participate will begin at the Fall Workshop.
Consultant, Karen Schadel's contract was extended through 2005.
The 2003 Convention was reviewed. 297 members registered for the convention. The Pre-Convention Workshops were well attended including 23 that are not KASBO members. The Trade Show had 32 booths. That extended to 74 vendors as associate members. The dinner theater was the entertainment highlight. Information presented at the sectionals earned high marks.
The 2004 convention will be at the Lawrence Holiday Inn, April 21-23.
The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 8, 2003, at the Salina Holiday Inn.
KASBO has developed a new Professional Recognition Program for members who meet certain leadership criteria. The program has three levels of recognition depending on an individuals' administrative responsibility and their level of education. Come to the session at the October 9th Fall Workshop to learn more on this exciting new program! Additional information and the application form is available on the KASBO website.
