KASBO Board of Directors Meeting Highlights

New Professional Recognition

Message from the President

Where has the summer gone? School was just out and here we are starting all over again. Unlike many other school district staff, school business offices are busiest through out the summer. Hours are spent closing out the fiscal year, preparing budgets, audits, and getting things ready for the new school year to start. I hope all of you have done this with great success and hopefully, have or will soon, find some time to relax and rejuvenate.

The 2003-2004 fiscal year began without new funds and many of us spent an excruciating year working with our district staff and community to findways to make ends meet. There have been many program cuts, staff reductions, school closures and increased fees throughout the state. Through it all, as in the past, you have all met those challenges with great professionalism and competence. And as you know, there are many more challenges both financial and academic ahead of us. KASBO will continue to follow its mission and goals which is to establish high standards of ethics and efficiency in school business methods and practices as they relate to the administration and operation of public schools in Kansas.

Professional development is often the first thing cut as budgets get tightened. What is important to remember also, it is when times are tight, we must come together, help each other by sharing ideas, learning the correct and most efficient way to perform our tasks, and still continue to follow statutes, policies and procedures. KASBO is this avenue. I encourage you all to participate in KASBO and its workshops and convention this year.

KASBO exists to support you and your staff. Please let us know what we can do to help.

"Back to the Future" with ASBO

The Association of School Business Officials' national conference in Charlotte, N.C. is October 31 to November 4. The theme this year is "Back to the Future." General session speakers include Ron Clark, Disney's 2002 Outstanding Teacher of the Year and Oprah Winfrey's first "Phenomenal Man." The conference will include information on such things as legal affairs, financial resource management, human resources, special education, facility management, transportation, risk management, food service, security, and new technology. It will also include asuper session on federal requirements pertaining to No Child Left Behind. Don't miss this opportunity to network with your peers on how to survive in these challenging times. One thing that I have found true serving on the ASBO school finance committee is that today's challenges are not unique to Kansas. If you are interested in attending the conference, registration information can be found on the http://www.asbointl.org/website. I hope to see you there!

National Convention Promotion Chairman,
Linda Jones, USD 259 Wichita
