Despite problems with the hotel air conditioning and having to break in a new catering manager and chef, the 38th Annual KASBO convention in Manhattan was another big success. A convention of this size can only be successful with the help of lots of people. Approximately 100 KASBO members were involved in some phase of the convention including greeters, convention planning committee, presenters, presiders, and inservice committee members. In addition, nearly 50 vendors participated in the convention with 40 represented in the Trade Show and 19 sponsoring the golf tournament. A big thank you to all those who helped in any way.
315 active members were in attendance at this year's convention. This number does not include retirees and vendors. Adding their numbers would bring total participation to approximately 375.
A big welcome to new KASBO board members Jenni Newell from Blue Valley, Fred Meier from Independence and Steve Koger, vendor representative from Management Advisory Computer Systems (MACS). Congratulations to your 2002-03 officers: Lori Blakesley, president from Hutchinson; Kathy Johnson, president-elect from Lawrence; Don Adkisson, vice president from Derby; Shirley Martin, treasurer from Shawnee Heights; and Todd Stephenson, secretary from Great Bend.
It truly has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your president this past year. So many times and in so many ways you, the members of KASBO, have pitched in to get the job done. I believe we have the best professional education organization in the state. You are the reason for our success. Keep up the good work.
Gary Jantz, Past President
USD 373 Newton
The KASBO Board of Directors met June 5, 2002, at the USD 373 Newton, McKinley Administrative Center with President Gary Jantz presiding.
Committee reports were presented. The convention report noted the 2002 KASBO Convention was a financial success. Membership of active/voting members is at 332 which will increase when those paying their 2002-2003 dues through USA are included. Vendor and retired associate membership is at 84.
KASBO Consultant, Karen Schadel's contract was extended through 2004.
Workshop dates and fees were approved. The workshops will be at the Salina Holiday Inn, with the Fall Workshop, October 1 - 2, 2002, and the Winter Workshop, February 19-20, 2003. Workshop fees were set at $40 for members and $65 for non-members
Rod Spangler, Kansas State Manager for American Fidelity, was approved to replace Joe Patterson on the KASBO Board of Directors.
Dr. Sharon Zoellner reported on Rob Balster's campaign for ASBO director. Vendors have been generous with their contributions to the campaign fund. A reception with a Dodge City theme will be at the Phoenix Hyatt to promote Dr. Balster's campaign. Cash prizes, the new KASBO pins and leftover tee shirts from the KASBO Convention will be passed at the reception and convention. KASBO will be hosting a hospitality room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel during the convention.
Interest has been expressed in developing a system for continuing ed-type hours. President Jantz recommended a committee be set up to study interest and development of a program to meet those needs.
The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at the Salina Holiday Inn
"ASBO&emdash;Managing Success" is the theme for the 88th Annual Meeting of ASBO in Phoenix, Arizona, October 25-29, 2002.
The learning opportunities at the ASBO Convention are tremendous. Session topics range from Accounting & Budgeting, to Finance, to Technology. There is something for everyone! It is not too late to register for the convention. Visit the ASBO website at www.asbointl.org for registration and program information.
The reception for Dr. Rob Balsters will be Sunday, October 27 at Phoenix Hyatt. All Kansans that are in attendance are encouraged to participate as hosts during the reception.
KASBO officers will be hosting a hospitality room from October 25-29 at the Crowne Plaza hotel. Room number and times will be posted in the hotel lobby.
The traditional KASBO breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, October 28, in the Hyatt. This event provides an opportunity for the Kansas delegation to share information and discuss conference presentations and activities. Notify Karen Schadel at 620.525.6512 if you plan to attend the breakfast or need additional information regarding the ASBO Convention.
The 2003 KASBO Convention will be held April 23-25, 2003, at the Hutchinson Plaza Hotel, 1400 N Lorraine, Hutchinson, KS 67501, 620.669.9311.
Congratulations to Vickie Roberts, USD 407 Russell. She submitted the winning pin design. Vickie will have a free workshop registration.
Workshop attendance is a wise decision to gain insights and knowledge on how to better utilize district resources during these difficult financial times.
