KASBO Board of Directors Notes

ASBO International Annual Meeting

Message from President Gary Jantz:

The mission of the Kansas Association of School Business Officials is to strengthen educational programs by enhancing support operations of Kansas educational institutions through quality in-service programs, networking opportunities and promoting positive legislation.

What's in a mission statement? Who ever really looks at a mission statement anyway? If you've never taken the time to read the KASBO mission statement, it would be worth your time to do so. It really does a good job of summarizing what this organization is all about. The primary reason KASBO exists is to serve you the members and the students in this state by providing learning and networking opportunities. Whether it is attending our workshops or convention or being involved in a leadership role on a committee or on the board of directors, KASBO offers opportunities to learn and grow. Our members and the leadership of KASBO are also actively involved in promoting legislation that benefits all Kansas students (our legislators don't always listen or agree, but that's another story).

As you prepare budgets, contracts, procedures and all the other things you do for the new school year, I encourage each of you to take the time to prepare yourselves for the year ahead. Make sure you take a few days off. But, also take advantage of the opportunities offered by KASBO to sharpen your skills and meet with your peers to swap information and just have a good time. Our fall workshop will be held October 4-5 at the Red Coach Inn in Salina. Work is already underway to plan the winter workshop in February and the convention next April in Manhattan. And, if you've never been involved in ASBO International, this fall would be a good time to attend a national meeting. Rob Balsters will be announcing his candidacy for an ASBO board of directors position at the convention to be held in Baltimore, Maryland, October 12-16. If you've never been to our nation's capitol, it would also be a good opportunity to make it to Washington, D.C. to see the sights. Contact Karen Schadel or myself for more information.

As your president for this year, I look forward to serving you. Please don't hesitate to call or email me with any suggestions you have to improve our organization. Our in-service committee, headed up by President-Elect Lori Blakesley, is constantly looking for suggestions for timely topics and good presenters. You'll find the names and addresses of our board of directors on the website or in the newsletter. Let us know what you think. Working together we can all make our mission statement a reality.

Convention Highlights

The Kansas Association of School Business Officials' Annual Convention in Great Bend was a huge success.

For the first time, we held a vendor trade show. Close to 200 free t-shirts were given away to those who attended the trade show. Many folks commented that it was nice to get a chance to meet new vendors and see the latest products.

The golf tournament also had a great turnout with 77 in attendance. A good time was had by all. Though we avoided rain, there was definitely a wind factor. Sorry, no one won the hole-in-one prize. Maybe next year!

The first annual KASBO choir was also a big hit under the leadership of Don Grant of Emporia. Thanks to Todd Covault for organizing the group.

Nancy Richardson of Haysville was honored at the banquet for receiving the Distinguished Service Award. She has spent many, many years serving the KASBO organization by speaking at training sessions, participating in committees, hosting the hospitality suite at the ASBO convention, and by serving as a past president of KASBO.

If you missed getting a KASBO shirt, contact Lori Blakesley of Hutchinson. There are still a few left. We will be planning on wearing them at the annual ASBO conference October 12-16 in Baltimore. We will be supporting Rob Balsters in his campaign to run for the ASBO board of directors in 2002.

Again, thanks to all of you who volunteered your time to make the conference a success. It has been a great year for me as president!

Linda Jones, KASBO Past President

Workshop dates and sites were approved. The Fall Workshop will be October 4-5, 2001, at the Salina Red Coach Inn. The Winter Workshop will be February 6-7, 2002, at the Salina Holiday Inn.

The board approved the continued affiliation with Association of School Business Official International.

Rob Balsters presented his campaign plan for a seat on the ASBO board of directors. KASBO will lend support for his candidacy.

Sharon Zoellner and Rob Balsters will serve as KASBO representatives on the Kansas Learning First Alliance coalition.

The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 4, 2001, at the Salina Holiday Inn.

ASBO International Annual Meeting

"Get Connected @ ASBO International" is the theme for the 87th Annual Meeting of ASBO in Baltimore, Maryland, October 12-16, 2001.

It is not too late to register for this learning experience. The convention is designed to provide professional development for all school management professionals. In addition to general sessions, discussion groups and clinics, the high-tech computer labs will provide some of the latest learning opportunities in the technology arena.

Added interest for Kansans will be Rob Balsters announcing his candidacy for a seat on the ASBO board of directors. During his tenure in USD 345 Seaman, Rob has been a member of KASBO and served as president in 1994-95. In 1999, Rob was honored by his peers with the KASBO Distinguished Service Award. Rob has been an integral part of KASBO with making presentations and serving on committees. His service to ASBO includes serving as chair of the ASBO School Finance Committee for three years. The formal announcement of Rob's candidacy will be Monday, October 15, at a function in the Renaissance Harborplace.

KASBO officers will hosting a hospitality room from October 12-16 at the Renaissance Harborplace hotel. Room number and times will be posted in the hotel lobby.

The traditional KASBO breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, October 15, in the Fell's Point Room of the Renaissance Harborplace hotel. This event provides an opportunity for the Kansas delegation to share information and discuss conference presentations and activities. Notify Karen Schadel at 620.525.6512 if you plan to attend the breakfast or need additional information regarding the ASBO Convention.
