Reflections

Message from KASBO President:

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!! Our convention in Wichita was a tremendous success, and it would not have been so wonderful without all of the many volunteers. Some of you indicated on the evaluation forms that you would be willing to help with next year's convention. I have your names, and someone from the convention committee will be contacting you this winter about what you can do to help make our Great Bend convention a success. I really appreciate you willingness to get involved. You all are the greatest bunch of folks anyone could ask to work with! I think I have yet to have anyone turn me down when asking for help. It is a real privilege to serve the KASBO organization where our members are our greatest asset. I have never in my career seen an organization where people are so willing to give of themselves.

We are already gearing up for the fall and winter workshops. Due to the popularity of the workshops the past few years, we are moving to the Holiday Inn of Salina where we will have much bigger meeting rooms. Thank you for your patience in finding better accommodations. If there is something you would like us to provide training on, contact Alan Schuler in Leavenworth or one of the other inservice committee members. They would love your input. It is amazing to me how all of you manage to keep up with the changing laws, regulations and general paperwork, and we want to do all that we can in assisting you in that endeavor.

Linda Jones, President

Convention Highlights

Wednesday activities:
Golf enthusiasts had ideal conditions for a morning of fun and an opportunity to win prizes. The Green Badge meeting for first time attendee's of the convention was well attended. Pre-convention workshops by dataTeam and MACS set the tone for the three days of learning and sharing. Eberly Farms was an idyllic setting for an evening of fun and good food. A variety of entertainment was enjoyed by all those attending the event. Exploration Place was a hit with those that toured the facility.

Thursday activities:
Changing the KASBO Business Meeting to a new time slot was well received. Officers elected at the meeting were: Vice-President, Lori Blakesley, USD 312; and Jim Freeman, USD 497 Lawrence and Ward Nippert, USD 418 McPherson were elected to the Board of Directors. Vendors met and elected Joe Patterson, American Fidelity and John Leonard, Reliant Financial Services to serve as their representatives on the Board.

Helen Askren, longtime KASBO member, was honored by her peers. She was selected to receive the Distinguished Service Award. After retiring from USD 335 Holton, Helen has devoted much of her retirement time to KASBO. She has been chairman of the Greeters and the Historical Committee. Anytime flashbulbs are going off, you can be assured Helen is behind that camera. The photographic history she has compiled for KASBO is a joy to review. Congratulations to a deserving KASBO member.

Freddy Fox & the Hotrods entertained following the banquet.

Friday Activities:
Passing of the gavel at the luncheon brought a successful KASBO Convention to a close.

Reflections

"Celebrating Our Success" was the theme for the 36th Annual KASBO Convention in April, 2000 held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wichita, Kansas. It was our pleasure to welcome Bill Felmy from ASBO International as our guest. Members also enjoyed two keynote speakers &endash; Mark Towers and Ralph Hood, as well as many excellent in-service sessions. Dale Dennis and Veryl Peter also gave an update on legislative issues, and as always, to a full house.

The President's Reception at the Boat House received very positive comments, and most vendors and members enjoyed having everyone in one large room to enjoy the hospitality provided. The KASBO Board will take your comments into consideration for future conventions. If you liked this format and would like to see it continued, please let the Board know.

After reviewing the convention evaluation forms, I feel the convention was a huge success, and I would like to thank all of those who worked so hard, prior and during the convention. Special recognition was given to the KASBO Past Presidents, Retirees, and Vendors for their dedication and valuable contributions to KASBO for many years. KASBO thanks these special people, as well as all of our members for having the foresight to make KASBO the success that it is today.

As a new school year is ready to begin, my term as the 1999-2000 KASBO President has come to an end. It has been my honor to serve as your President, and I hope I have served you well. Congratulations to Linda Jones, the 2000-2001 KASBO President. She is already busy working with ideas to make KASBO even better. I know she will do a fantastic job.

Thanks again for all of your support during the past year and I hope you all have a great school year.

Myrna Morrison
KASBO Immediate Past President
