Message from KASBO President

Another new school year is about to begin. Soon the staff and students will be returning. Magically, the buildings have been cleaned, repairs made, new budgets have been built, staff hired, contracts drawn up, negotiations are complete (for most I hope), bills have been paid, paychecks have been delivered on time and all the other things that keep a district running and I still get questioned every year “ Gee, do you work in the summer?“

As we know the KASBO membership is the backbone that keeps the schools in Kansas operating smoothly. I believe that KASBO helps us to keep this large machine running by keeping us current on pressing issues and building relationships with our peers from around the state that share many of the same problems and issues we face on a day to day basis.

As your new president I would welcome and encourage any input from the membership. Just as in the quote it takes an entire village to educate a child; it also takes the whole membership to keep this organization running. Please help provide the organization input with the current issues that need to be addressed at our workshops and convention. We will do our best to get presenters for the issues.

I would specifically like your opinion on this newsletter. Should we offer the newsletter in an online format only, hard copy only or both? Please let me know how you feel.

The KASBO executive board recently had a goal-setting workday with John Musso, the executive director of ASBO in Salina where a lot of good information was gathered. With Fred’s leadership we came up with some new goals that I believe will help us with decision making in the future.

Thank you for your confidence in me to be your president for the coming year. Have a good rest of the summer break and may your start of school is smooth sailing.

KASBO Exposed:
What really went on at the
KASBO Board of Directors Meeting
April 17, 2007

Your KASBO Board of Directors met Tuesday evening just before the opening of the annual convention to make sure your event would be all you hoped it would be.

KASBO officers endeavor to be on the cutting edge of all things educationally business like. To promote diversity and sensitivity training, Director Deb Hoffman presented President Fred Meier and Vice President Clifford Burk with aqua feather boas, tiaras and their own matching aqua convention bags which they wore throughout the board meeting to the fascination and delight of all.

After a time of rolls called, motions made and votes unanimously passed, we pressed on to other important issues…Casino night and dancing until dawn (well, only if you live where the sun rises at 1:00am!) All the plans for the convention were signed, sealed and delivered. Sectionals were ready to section, presenters were ready to present, greeters were ready to greet, vendors were ready to vend, decorations were ready to decorate, dealers were ready to deal, dancers were ready to dance, and KASBO members were ready to do what they to best: connect, confer, commune and consume!

As evidenced be the large number of green badge registerees for convention, there are a number of you new to school business. KASBO has a well stocked cellar full of seasoned (a polite way of saying aged) veterans ready and willing to help. Don’t be shy. It’s tough out there and we all need all the help we can get. You may contact Karen Schadel via fax at (620) 525-6368 or kschadel@gbta.net for an application form.

The Board and its committees continue to work diligently to provide members with great opportunities to be motivated and educated in many aspects of school business. And we won’t let the fear of global warming stop us. Plans are already under way for workshops and conventions through the year 2012. If you have suggestions for educational enhancements you would like to see included in the KASBO workshop and convention plans, please contact us with your ideas.

The Board knows that we have many KASBO members whose professionalism in their jobs needs to be recognized. And you know who you are. Just go to www.kasbo.org to get yourself an application for the Professional Recognition Award. It’s easy… and a good thing to show your boss when you ask for your next raise, promotion or time away to go to KASBO events.

Speaking of which, there is still time and opportunity to get in on the ASBO International Annual Convention in Toronto, Canada, October 12-15, 2007. Contact Karen Schadel for the details. But remember—a passport will be needed. So hurry on down to get one of those, oh, so flattering passport shots. BTW, can anyone explain why passport and driver’s license photographers seem to have gone to the same school?

Strategists and planners that we are, your KASBO board will be meeting on June 7 & 8 with John Musso of ASBO International for our strategic planning session. Our desire is to continue to provide KASBO members with an organization that really lives up to its’ mission statement (which you can find on our web page www.kasbo.org)

Mark your calendars for November 1 & 2, 2007. Those are the dates for our Fall KASBO workshop at the Grand Prairie Hotel in Hutchinson. Surprise!!! You thought I would say Salina. That KASBO…we’re just full of surprises.

Can’t wait to see you all again…
