Greetings and salutations! Summer is in full swing so the question is always posed, “What do you do all summer, when school is out and the teachers are home?” I don’t know about you but my sarcasm level rises to new heights when I hear that. However, I smile and reassure the misinformed public member that we have plenty of things to keep us busy!
Along those lines, the KASBO Board of Directors continued to collaborate on the issues concerning the 2006 KASBO Convention and professional development to name a few. Without a doubt, the convention proved successful and fun. Our attendee numbers were just over 275 and the exciting part was that forty-one were first-timers. Furthermore, the evaluations (thank you for filling them out) were very positive and came with insightful suggestions.
The Board takes the suggestions serious and each year we purposefully act on the recommendations. One outcome requested by KASBO membership led to the development of a KASBO Mentoring Program which you may have heard a little about at Convention. Virtually everyone can admit that starting out in a school business position proved extremely hard due to the uniqueness of what we do. KASBO prides itself on the “networking” aspect of our organization which is right up the mentor alley. We have an abundance of seasoned veterans willing to share their knowledge combined with a new supply clerks/business managers who need information. It’s really very simple. You received a form at convention and you can get one from Karen Schadel via fax: (620) 525-6368 or e-mail: kschadel@gbta.net. Please take advantage of the program if you are relatively new. You are not in the battle alone. And veterans, your involvement is crucial. Sign up today!
Put these dates down in your planner for next year. The Fall Workshop will be held at the Salina Holiday Inn on Wednesday and Thursday, October 26 th and 27 th; and the Winter Workshop will be at the Smoky Hill/Central Kansas Educational Service Center on Thursday, February 22. For those early birds, and those of us who take things a little slower, the 2007 KASBO Convention will be held in Great Bend. The Highland Hotel and Convention Center will take your reservation for April 18-20, 2007, now at (620)-792-2431. Remember to tell the clerk that you are with KASBO.
Now, turning to the national side of things, the fall ASBO International Convention, October 13-16, is in Pittsburgh, Pa. Karen Schadel has information regarding lodging and our members are again asked to consider attending. If you haven’t been to Pittsburgh lately, or at all, you are in for treat. The conference is always the premiere event for school business officials nation-wide and the lodging, shopping and entertainment compliments it.
I hope to see all of you during next years events and certainly will run into a number of KASBO members and non-members at budget workshops and the like. Keeping focus on our goal of “education for every child” sometimes gets set aside for the attention put on the legislative and court issues and other legal battles. Our joy and fun seem limited but only by letting it be so. “We are doin’ it for the kids”, made famous by Dale Dennis, Kansas Deputy Education Commissioner, must remain in sight. Continue the fight, be proud! This is a winning combination.
Todd Stephenson. USD 313 Buhler
KASBO Secretary
I would like to take this opportunity to invite the KASBO membership to the annual ASBO Conference in Pittsburgh, PA on October13 – 16, 2006. The ASBO leadership will be offering sessions on current issues that affect all of us on a national level as well as the local level.
Sharing and connecting with other business officials from across the nation has always been one of the most beneficial aspects of ASBO for me. The conference provides you this opportunity in many ways. I am looking forward to you joining me in Pittsburgh.
