Message from KASBO President

As we recap another year, one tends to dwell on those events that produced the most emotion related to our successes, disappointments, frustration and accomplishments. How do you rate this year with respect to your responsibilities within your District, your commitment to your legislators and community needs for information, your balance of quality time between work, family, church, and other entities for which you hold value ?

As our KASBO Board meets to review our year, we will look at the professional development activities offered, the logistical aspects of the convention, and most importantly, the survey responses from those participating in these events. While we will celebrate at the positive comments and atta-boys, we also take seriously those expressions of concern. Our attendance at the Salina workshops was on target, but of concern this year is our participation count at the convention in Wichita. While the surveys have come in very positive in most areas for the convention (one exception was for the amount of food at the vendor showcase - whoops) we can not overlook the fact that the number of participants for our KASBO annual convention has been decreasing over the last few years. It would be easy to blame this on the financial conditions of our Districts and inability to support this kind of activity - OR - we could work harder to try and provide the kind of activities, training and communication that will ensure your commitment and validate your insistence for participation. Challenging words, but if we can not convince you the opportunities offered are in your best interest, how can we expect you to express these same feelings when making the Professional Development activity request in the first place ?

That is our challenge. We need a better avenue to hear your concerns and needs for how KASBO can better meet the challenges you feel every day in the work place. Yes, we want to have fun (bowling, golfing, dancing to Elvis); we want to be able to laugh (Jim Jacobus buttons); but we also need to help make the experience so invaluable that if you even think about missing next year, or know of someone in a surrounding District that will not be attending, you immediately start feeling a void inside !!

Please let us know your thoughts, (we get it on the lack of food !!). Help us make our KASBO professional organization the best it can be.

Thank you for letting me represent this organization in my capacity as president this past year. It has been an honor to be associated with such a fun-loving professional group of individuals empowered to impact the lives of our children. Best wishes to Kathleen, Fred and Clifford as they direct the path of KASBO into the future.

Have a great summer.

Convention Wrap-Up

Thank you, KASBO members, for some great professional development opportunities at the convention this year! Based on the evaluations of the sessions presented, over 80% of the responses were in the 4 or 5 range, with 5 being rated Best. I think this speaks highly for those of you who presented or who were responsible for obtaining a speaker.

We had some very good suggestions for making next year’s convention even better. Those suggestions will go to the Professional Development Committee for consideration. One suggestion that has been mentioned more than once is to take into consideration the different sizes of school districts when planning sessions. Every district is unique in terms of size and job duties and KASBO will attempt to recognize this diversity when planning in the future.

We are always interested in getting suggestions from you on topics you would be interested in getting more information on. Fred Meier will be the new chairman of the Professional Development Committee next year and would love to hear from you. He can be reached at fmeier@indyschools.com.

Golf Tournament

KASBO GOLF had its annual Pre-Convention Golf Tournament at Hidden Lakes Golf Course in Derby, Kansas on Wednesday Morning April 21st. We had 17 full teams as 68 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day on the links. The format was a Four-Person Scramble, and we had 12 hole prizes contests throughout the event as well. The day started with registration, breakfast and warm up, and was followed after golf by a BBQ Buffet Lunch. Many Corporate Sponsors were involved in the event from sponsoring our beverage cart, breakfast, lunch, hole prizes, cash prizes and 7 companies actually purchased hole sponsorships to round out our event!

KASBO would like to thank all those that participated and those corporate sponsors that made this annual event a true success! See you next year in Topeka!

April 19, 2005 KASBO Board of Directors Meeting and the
2005 KASBO State Convention-

Hello KASBO members and vendors! Thank all of you for another successful year at the 2005 KASBO State Convention. Our hope is that you all got to do something new this year. Choices ranged from the Bowling Tournament to the Casino Night to the “Parking Lot Discussion”. If not you most certainly enjoyed the informative Vendor Showcase or the musical entertainment of impersonator, Roy Helm, or comical relief of our Friday Keynote speaker Pearl Rovaris-McDonald. Thank goodness that at this tense time someone allowed us the opportunity to laugh at ourselves. Furthermore, the Professional Development Committee provided our members with eight different tracts to choose from.

The upcoming year seems to hold more suspense than a B rated horror move. At the time of writing the Kansas State Supreme Court has issued a ruling for the Kansas Legislature to provide an additional $143 million dollars into the school finance formula passed earlier. All politics aside, pulling together a budget is almost impossible and those daring enough will have to come up with more than a few scenarios to anticipate the outcome. Fortunately KASBO members were able to gain words of wisdom from Dale Dennis and Veryl Peter, who, again bestowed their gracious wisdom and strategies to the attendees.

In other news, Dr. Rob Balsters, ASBO International Board of Director and KASBO Past President is now seeking the office of ASBO Vice President. As with our group, Rob’s successful candidacy would then allow him to move up to the offices of President-Elect and President of ASBO. The KASBO Board of Directors support Rob and hope that all ASBO members will by remembering to vote on-line prior to the ASBO Convention in October.

This year four more recipients were added to the KASBO Professional Recognition Program which serves to recognize those KASBO members who have earned points by attending KASBO and/or ASBO events and who have spent time working on committees or providing service to the organization in some other manner. As a reminder, don’t miss the opportunity to do something to enhance your career. Any Board member or committee member will attest to the fact that you always get more out of serving this organization than you put in.

Please note an exciting new service to KASBO members. Steve Koger, Vendor Representative from MACS and Greenbush, are providing a ListServ just for our members. The details are getting worked out but the idea is to have a tool to disseminate information to KASBO members without using it for surveys and advertising. There will also be a login setup for security. The information is included in this publication.

ListServ Registration & Guidelines

Communication with membership is a critical component for any organization. Over the years KASBO communicated predominantly through the mail; but in recent years with the assistance of our Webmaster - Perry McCabe, developed a significant volume of information on our kasbo.org web site. While we have been able to communicate with email, the sheer logistics of keeping up-to-date with everyone’s addresses is a challenge, not to speak of the difficulties of sending our information to 400 plus locations without it appearing to be “spam” to the receiving servers.

We are about to take another major communication step forward with our own ListServe application - sponsored and maintained by Greenbush and long time sponsoring vendor M.A.C.S. In order to ensure that everyone has a good understanding of what we can expect from this application, the KASBO Board of Directors has developed the following Guidelines for its use:

ListServ Guidelines

  • The Executive Director for KASBO will be assigned as the gate-keeper. This person’s responsibility will be to review all requested information prior to being disseminated to those participating with the ListServ application.
  • If the gate-keeper has any concerns regarding memos requested to be disseminated, the KASBO president with input from the officers will make final determination.
  • No attachments will be allowed to be disseminated via the ListServ until they have been scanned for anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
  • An archive of all messages disseminated will be maintained. All archived messages will be available to ListServ participants via Internet access at
http://www.m-a-c-s.com/kasbo and maintained for a period of at least 3 years.

ListServ Registration

You can subscribe to the ListServ by sending an email to kasbo-on@m-a-c-s.com. No need to put anything in the subject box or any text message. After you have sent the email, you will receive back in a few minutes a confirmation message from “KASBO administration”. Simply Reply to this message to confirm your registration. You are now registered into the KASBO ListServ group. If at any later date you would like to remove your email address from the group, simply send another email to kasbo-off@m-a-c-s.com and your address will be removed.
