KASBO has 50 reasons to attend the 36th Annual KASBO Convention in Wichita. Presentations from Auditing to CustomiZing Enrollment Procedures have been planned by the In Service and Convention Committees. That is just the beginning of an outstanding program available to all attending the Convention.
Wednesday events begin with the "Golf Tournament" organized by Marvin Sisk. New things are in store for the golfers. Check Marvin's article for the update.
Something revived from the past is the Green Badge meeting. This will be an orientation session for first time attendees. Gary's article gives details.
Workshops for those members using data Team and MACS will be from 2:00 - 4:00, Wednesday afternoon.
A new experience in Wichita is a visit to Exploration Place. This will be an educational and fun tour for the Convention goers. Transportation from the Hyatt and Broadview will be provided by the Wichita Convention Bureau on the trolley. Pat gives details in her article.
An appropriate closing of the first day is a fun filled evening at Eberly Farms. Dress for the evening is casual, include your dancing shoes and bring your lucky charms for Bingo and Farkel. Transportation to Eberly Farms is being provided by USD 259's School Services & Leasing. The address of Eberly Farms is 13111 West 21st Street North. Bill gives all the information in his article.
Thursday events begin with a breakfast at 8:00. Keynote speaker Mark Tower will educate and entertain following the breakfast.
Convention is not complete without Dale Dennis and Veryl Peter bringing all up to date on the Legislative Session after breakfast.
Three KASBO retiree's will present on the topic "Life After Retirement" for those who are retired, as well as those looking at retiring.
A new item has been added to the Thursday luncheon. The Annual Business Meeting will be held following the noon meal and comments by the ASBO representative. Be sure you have the nominations for Officers and Distinguished Service Award candidates to Perry McCabe.
KASBO is fortunate to have 23 members that will share their expertise during 13 of the 50 Sectionals. Presentations on Food Service and Maintenance are included. Good information from those actively involved.
Presentations by experts in their selected fields will round out the Sectionals on Thursday and Friday.
Another revival from the past is the President's Reception, 4:00-6:00, prior to the banquet. The reception will be at the "Boathouse" across the street from the Hyatt. Vendors are supporting this event with hospitality for all.
The banquet followed by a dance with music provided by perennial favorite, Freddy Fox and the Hotrods will conclude Thursday's events.
Friday morning, breakfast on your own, will precede the Sectionals.
The closing luncheon speaker is veteran presenter and humorist Ralph Hood.
After the passing of the gavel, the big prize drawing will conclude the 2000 KASBO Convention.
Support from vendors for the Convention is genuinely appreciated. They are furnishing hospitality at all specialty events and breaks, in addition to contributing support for other convention functions. Please be sure and thank them for their generous contributions.
In conclusion, an item of importance--regulating the temperature in meeting rooms is difficult. We want everyone to be comfortable, so if you tend to be cool please bring a jacket or sweater.
The Seventh Annual KASBO Early Bird Golf Tournament will be held at MacDonald Golf Course, one of the top rated courses in the Wichita area, on Wednesday morning April 19. This year will feature a $5,000 Hole-In-One prize, plus golf balls and hats for all participants, and many other great prizes.
The format for the tournament is a four-person team scramble. Tee time will be scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Beginners are encouraged to play.
Come join the fun so that we will reach the goal of 100 participants. To enter complete the enclosed registration form.

Questions about KASBO and what to expect at the Convention?
All first-time KASBO Convention participants are encouraged to attend the Green Badge Meeting on Wednesday, April 19, at 1:30. This brief session is designed to acquaint first-timers with the KASBO organization and activities at the convention.
The session will wrap up in time for you to participate in scheduled workshops or the tour.
A door prize will be given away at the meeting.

Along the banks of the Arkansas River in downtown Wichita is a place where young and old can experiment and learn…a place that is bright, inviting and fun. It is a creative combination of a contemporary science center, and children's museum for the 21st Century.
Two main goals are to provide stimulating activities and resources that help visitors learn about how the world works, and to develop creative skills that contribute to living more satisfying productive and healthy lives.
Exploration Place has more than 98,000 square feet of indoor space with fascinating, interactive exhibits, theatres and programs. There are four exhibit areas focusing on key aspects of our world…people, places and things.
One of the most dramatic ways of learning will be through the two theatres and an auditorium. You will journey to the stars and galaxies, soar through cells of the body, into spiraling DNA, and down to the realm of molecules and atoms…traveling through space and time, sometimes aided by the power of 3-D projections. The simulation center will take visitors into worlds outside everyday human experience. It will simulate real life situations, like exploring the depths of the oceans or flying training maneuvers.
Planning has included extensive research to serve a diverse audience and to serve residents and tourists of all ages with extraordinary resources for exploration.
KASBO will be given a 1 hour plus tour of the facility (free of charge) with time to browse in gift shop and café after the tour. Each tour is limited to 25 people.

Don't miss KASBO 2000 Wednesday evening!
After a fun and hopefully sun-filled morning on the links with Marvin, come relax with friends at Eberly Farms. Nestled along the woodlands of the Cowskin Creek, Eberly Farms offers rustic elegance in the woods.
Evening activities begin with a social hour and hayrack ride into the wild woods--if you dare. This ride should whet your appetite for what will be a wonderful buffet dinner of smoked brisket and BBQ chicken. After dinner activities include simply relaxing with friends on the spacious wrap-around porch of the outpost or dancing to your favorite tunes under the stars. For the more competitive spirit, there will be Bingo games or perhaps you may want to become an official "Farkel Head." We'll show you how.
It's more fun when all our friends are there. Sign up now!

Well, the message was heard by the legislature that we expected them to honor their word (which became law in 1999) in allocating $50 for the 99-00 budget. That has been restored. Thanks to all who contacted folks in Topeka to express their concern. The situation is rapidly deteriorating for next year if we cannot muster the same tactical maneuvers for the good of the children in Kansas.
The 2 major issues we need to have patrons focus on are the promise of $50 on the base for next year and maintaining special education funding. Currently, the proposal is for $37 to be put toward the base. This is $13 less than what was written into the law in 1999. There is also a move afoot to reduce Special Education funding of excess cost for 85% to 80%. This will result in a net gain of only $25 on the base as districts will have to cover the special education budget issues from the general fund.
PLEASE make an effort to get this information into as many hands as possible so that we can make our voices and concerns heard in Topeka. The prime time for contacting legislators will be the third week in March.
UPDATE
After the above article was written news broke about the possibility of another source of revenue for the state. According to the Governor, this revenue, which he is "optimistically cautious" about could help fund the full $50 on the base and provide for 85% funding of Special Education excess costs. It is important to note that this revenue may or may not be forthcoming and will not be a steady source of income but more of a one-time fix.
Please continue to contact legislators with the message that we expect them to fund what they legislated last year.
