Message from KASBO President

Happy New Year! I hope you were able to take some well deserved time during the Holidays to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. It is so important for each of us to find time to relax and enjoy time away from the work environment on a regular basis.

In the Kansas public education arena, 2005 was quite a year! It would be nice to be able to predict a quieter, calmer and less hectic (perhaps even boring?) 2006, but I don’t think there’s much of a chance of that happening. I’m sure we’ll all be closely watching the actions of the Kansas Legislature as they work through the issue of complying with the Kansas Supreme Court ruling. There will certainly be much more information available from Legislative Post Audit and from the contracted services of Standard and Poor's. As school business officials, several of us have been very involved in providing information for the various reports that will be provided to legislators and we have a tremendous opportunity and obligation to make sure our local legislators understand the information given to them. I would encourage each of you to work closely with your superintendent and board of education in communicating with your local legislators, inviting them to visit your district or in providing them with information.

KASBO was well represented by 25 members at the ASBO Convention in Boston in October. The elections results for Vice-President did not turn out as we had hoped, but we can be very proud of Rob Balsters’ service as an ASBO board member. Thank you, Rob, for your dedicated service to this organization!

The KASBO Board and various committees have been busy this fall. The Mentoring Committee is working on an exciting proposal that will be very beneficial to new KASBO members. The Professional Development Committee provided an excellent workshop in October and has plans for a great workshop on February 23. The Convention Committee has also been busy planning activities for the convention in Topeka on April 19-21 that you won’t want to miss. I hope you are able to take advantage of these opportunities for enrichment and networking with fellow KASBO members.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact a KASBO Board member with any questions or comments you may have regarding our organization.

I hope you have a great start to the New Year and hope to see you in Salina in February!

KASBO Webpage Serves Membership

The KASBO homepage, www.kasbo.org <http://www.kasbo.org/> is maintained to serve the interests of the membership of KASBO. Every effort is made to keep current, updated and new information on the KASBO. Recently, we have added a column by Governor Sebelius that is published periodically and sent to us. Also, the KASBO homepage tries to keep updated information that is pertinent to the schools of Kansas relative to Kansas governmental actions that might impact our schools.

The KASBO newsletter is published on the homepage as soon or before it even comes out in print. In addition, the past issues of the KASBO newsletter are available dating back to December, 1997. You can also find a lot of other historical and current information about KASBO on the homepage. Also, if you need information on upcoming KASBO workshops or conventions, board of director meetings, or ASBO conventions and leadership meetings, that information is available on the KASBO homepage. There is a wealth of archived information contained on the KASBO homepage. There is also a link on the KASBO homepage that contains links to many other sites that might be valuable to the KASBO membership.

The KASBO homepage tries to keep a list of current vacancies that exist in district administrative positions that might be of interest to KASBO members. That list is updated on a weekly basis. If you have vacancies that you would like to see listed on the KASBO homepage, please submit that information to me at pmccabe@usd261.com.

If there is information you would like to see included on the KASBO homepage that is not currently there, please contact me at pmccabe@usd261.com and I will see what we can do to make the KASBO homepage more valuable to our membership. Thanks for all the information that you do provide me to help keep the website current. Please visit the website often at www.kasbo.org <http://www.kasbo.org/> .

Boston ASBO

October 2005 found 25 Kansas School Business Officials in the bean town of Boston for the ASBO International Convention. There were many wonderful speakers and presenters who graciously shared their knowledge from accounting issues to zero-based budgeting and everything in between. This convention is the premier meeting place for business officials throughout the country and the world. The networking opportunities provided give everyone a chance to learn from peers in other states. This can be a great learning experience as well as a validation of things that are going well back home.

A special event was hosted by the Kansas Delegation to showcase our very own Dr. Rob Balsters. This was the culminating election process for the position of Vice President. Many folks helped to pull off our reception with great success. As the character Dorothy, I would like to extend a special thanks to Keith Love, our beloved scarecrow and Clifford Burk, the ever so charming Tin Man. These two gentleman added a great dimension to our Wizard of Oz theme. The over 300 folks who attended enjoyed a variety of delicious desserts and coffee. During the evening many folks were able to visit with Rob as we shared our hope for his successful election. Unfortunately, the outcome was not what we had hoped for but the campaign was successful in getting Kansas in front of this national organization. I want to extend my personal thanks to all who helped along the way. The KASBO Board and leadership have been a great asset to this venture.

I would encourage each of you to check out ASBO International as a professional development opportunity. There is a new program offered that provides scholarships to new business officials who are interested in attending. You can find out more at  www.asbointl.org < http://www.asbointl.org/> .  Please check it out and we hope to see many of you in Pittsburg next fall

BOARD SHORTS
from the October 13, 2005 Board of Directors Meeting

Hello from the KASBO Board of Directors. We hope that your fall semester was productive and that you had a very happy holiday season.

The KASBO Board of Directors wants to convey how proud of our membership we are. Without question KASBO contains professional, hardworking, honest school business persons who we serve gladly and respectfully. Furthermore, Cliff Burk, Membership Committee Chairperson, appeals to you for suggestions on how KASBO entice and recruit new members. Please feel free to contact Cliff if you think of a good idea. KASBO is still the best deal around at $20 per year membership fee.

The month of February approaches and you should be making plans to attend the KASBO Winter Workshop at Smoky Hill Service Center, in Salina, on February 23rd. The work-shop is scheduled as a one day event, 8:00am to 4:00pm. Our inquiries show that our membership likes this set-up due to our busy schedules. However, KASBO still provides the best, most cost effective professional development day available.

Another event to keep in mind is the ASBO International Convention which is in Boston for the fall of 2006. Lately Dr. Rob Balsters has been synonymous with ASBO. As you know, he was nominated to the ASBO International Board of Directors and has honorably represented Kansas. Now Rob seeks the office of President-Elect which will lead to the President of ASBO. As before, Kansans attending the convention are asked to participate in the reception for Rob. Dorothy and Scarecrow (maybe even the Wicked Witch) are expected to be in attendance. This whole evening will be a highlight to look forward to along with the excitement of the rest of the convention.

KASBO, as an organization, is set up to provide our members with the latest school business news and pertinent information. One of our best tools yet is the creation of the KASBO ListServ, supported by M.A.C.S. and Greenbush. So far, the response is great and there are 80+ subscribers. Please take the time to consider joining our group. KASBO’s commitment is to disseminate carefully what is sent out to our members. The only time you may be asked to respond to any survey is when the information is directly related to KASBO business. The Board would also like to use the listserv as a way to send out such items as newsletters and registration forms in order to cut expenses and utilize the technology available. We do need your support though. You can sign up by sending an e-mail to this address: kasbo-on@m-a-c-s.com, and asking to be added.

Another KASBO essential is to get signed up for the Professional Development Recognition Program. Maybe you have looked in to application before deciding that it seemed too complicated, or maybe you haven’t taken the time. Both responses need to be re-evaluated. First, the program is changing by setting all applicants at one tier, Kansas School Business Official (KSBO). Second, the process is actually quite simple, you just need to be involved. PLEASE-take another look at the KASBO website, www.kasbo.org, and check the criteria. But, remember, the due date is March 1 st.

One final note-it’s not too early to be thinking about the 2006 KASBO State Convention at the Topeka Capital Plaza and Convention Center. The convention is Wednesday, April 19 through Friday, April 21. The hotel is super, the accommodations for our convention and Vendor Show are plentiful, and the professional development/networking opportunities are vast. To include yourself just takes setting the date on your calendar, reserving the car, and calling the hotel. Oh, did I mention-golfing, bowling, dancing and – shopping?!

KASBO Professional Recognition Program

The Professional Recognition Program, which is for members who meet certain leadership criteria is now in its third year. Eighteen of our colleagues have received this distinguished award at past KASBO Conventions. The program was revised this year from three types of recognition to one category called the Kansas School Business Official. Qualifications for the program are on the KASBO website. The applications deadline is March 1, 2006 so act now to be recognized by your peers at the Convention in April.
