The story of the Kansas Association of School Business Officials began on the University of Kansas campus in March 1954 with "The First Conference on Public School Business Management." The conference was termed a success, with 29 school administrators in attendance.
In the fall of 1963, a group of Kansas business officials gathered for breakfast at the Denver ASBO meeting. Lewis Brotherson, Kansas City, chaired the meeting and the 13 Kansans in attendance responded favorably to the idea of forming a state organization. An organizational committee was formed with William Studyvin of Shawnee Mission as chair, and a meeting was held at the University of Kansas on November 16, 1963, to set up a program for the first meeting of the new association.
On February 28, 1964, 23 interested school administrators gathered at KU to adopt a constitution and bylaws, elect officers, and appoint committees.
The first annual Kansas Association of School Business Officials Convention was held in Lawrence, April 23, 1964, with 40 members in attendance.
The vision of that small group of individuals has developed into a legacy that provides programs for professional development in business methods and practices for the KASBO membership. Services provided for the membership include Spring and Fall Workshops and the Annual Convention.
In 2001 the Board of Directors affirmed KASBO's commitment to a unified profession of school business management by signing a reaffirmation of affiliation document with ASBO International. In addition to providing in-service opportunities and leadership training for our members, ASBO International provides KASBO its non-profit status.
As we complete forty four years of service to the membership, the mission to strengthen educational programs by enhancing support operations of Kansas educational institutions through quality in-service programs, networking opportunities and promoting positive legislation remains as the founders of the organization envisioned in 1964.
